The abortion pill stops a pregnancy by blocking a hormone called progesterone, which the body needs to support a pregnancy. This makes the embryo stop growing, and the uterus lining breaks down.

Misoprostol makes the uterus tighten to push out the embryo, sac, and lining. This means the pregnancy tissue will pass through the vagina. This process can take up to 48 hours and may cause heavy bleeding, strong cramps, and other symptoms. See risks and side effects below for more details.
You’ll need to go back to the clinic two weeks after taking Misoprostol to check if the abortion worked completely. If you used a telehealth provider, ask about follow-up steps.
